With its in-person dimension impacted by the pandemic, the Portsmouth Institute remains active in producing a rich array of publications and online presentations. The Institute invites all to join Prior Michael Brunner for a weekly series of weekly Lenten reflections, beginning this Sunday. Videos will be released on each Sunday of Lent beginning on February 21st through Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, March 28th (Click for information and registration). In addition to this Lenten series, the Institute recently sponsored a presentation a Zoom lecture for students and faculty with scientist and theologian Ilia Delio, OSF on the topic “Care for Creation.” Sr. Ilia holds the Josephine C. Connelly Endowed Chair in Theology at Villanova University, and is the author of seventeen books, including several award-winning titles. Her presentation was part of an ongoing initiative to offer the community opportunities to engage with some of world’s leading experts on the intersection of science, philosophy, and theology. This Friday, February 19, the Institute joined several organizations to co-sponsor a presentation on John Henry Newman by Irish historian Eamon Duffy. In this “conversation,” Professor Duffy explored fundamental consistencies underlying the apparent contradictions in Newman’s understanding of the relation between revealed truth and intellectual freedom. An upcoming student lecture, “Science is an Act of Worship,” will feature Brother Guy Consolmagno, S.J., Director of the Vatican Observatory. The Institute’s Events Calendar provides up to date postings on all that is planned.
