Victor Martin was born in San Jose, California and graduated from Santa Clara Preparatory School in 1924 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1930.
After working in Washington DC and Boston, he returned to MIT as a member of the faculty. In 1939, he entered the novitiate at Fort Augustus Abbey with a view of becoming a member of the Portsmouth Priory Community.
After completing his novitiate at St. Anselm’s Abbey, Washington DC, he returned to Portsmouth. Having been ordained a priest in December 1944, he taught in the school, managed the Monastery’s farm, and was housemaster for many years. Fr. Hilary contributed much to the growth of the Community. In his years of retirement, he directed a small guest house for the use of those visiting the school or Monastery.
Dom Victor Hilary Martin died on January 3, 1981, at the age of 74, after a week in the hospital.
