Portsmouth Abbey Monastery is a house of prayer and work for the Monks of the English Benedictine Congregation (in old terms,
Black Monks of England)
Our monastery is over 100 years old and the focus of all our prayer and work is
Contemplation
or
so-called Pure Prayer
or
Union with God.
Our day starts with morning prayers at 5:45 am followed by time for personal prayer, then Holy Mass.
We gather together 3 more times in Portsmouth Abbey Church to pray together. By our tradition and long-lasting Benedictine way of living we have come to know that this is one of the best ways for us to grow in holiness, as individuals and as a community.
Every monk of the house is carefully helped by the Abbot and the seniors to find a balanced way of life and most importantly to pursue this call to be a contemplative.
This sums up everything we do and what we are about:
We work to grow in contemplation and pray to remain in contemplation.
