The candidate for a Benedictine vocation believes first and foremost that he has received a gospel invitation to follow our Lord Jesus Christ.
In order to attain this union with God and likeness to Christ, the candidate seeks to live his life according to Gospel precepts. He gives glory to God by becoming, at last, God-centered instead of self-centered. This is why St. Benedict wrote his Rule, and why Benedictine monasteries exist.
The monk promises to God that he will observe the evangelical counsels of consecrated celibacy, poverty and obedience. In addition, he vows stability in the monastery, obedience according to the Rule of St. Benedict and a continuing commitment to growth in the Benedictine monastic way.
